Introduction to the lung sounds

Lung sounds are the special type of sounds that are heard/auscultated when the air moves in and out of the respiratory tract.

Basic Lung Sounds

  • Vesicular Breathing – Normal
  • Crackles – Fine (Rales)
  • Coarse – Crackles (Rales)
  •  Wheeze
  • Rhonchi – Low Pitched Wheezes
  • Bronchial Breath Sounds
  • Pleural Rubs
  • Bronchovesicular Lung Sounds

Intermediate Lung Sounds

  • Vesicular – Diminished
  • Bronchophony – Healthy
  • Bronchophony – Abnormal
  • Egophony – e
  • Egophony – a
  • Whispered Pectoriloquy – Healthy
  • Whispered Pectoriloquy – Abnormal
  • Wheeze – Expiratory
  • Wheeze – Monophonic
  • Wheeze – Polyphonic
  • Crackles – Early Inspiratory (Rales)
  • Crackles- Late Inspiratory (Rales)
  • Stridor
